The Poliziano Trail along the ancient walls has been opened

This trail connects the outside of the medieval gate Porta delle Farine with the area of Piazza Santa Maria dei Servi and runs close to the house of Angelo Ambrogini’s birth. The great humanist, poet and philologist, known as Poliziano (1454-1494), was born in Montepulciano and left as a teenager for Florence after the death of his father in 1465. In Florence, he lived at the court of Lorenzo the Magnificent, also tutoring his sons Piero and Giovanni (the latter later became Pope Leo X).

The trail was built as part of the “Support Interventions for Tuscan Walled Towns and Fortifications” pursuant to Tuscany Regional Law 8/2021. It winds under the ancient walls of Montepulciano for just about 200 linear metres.

The Poliziano trail offers a lovely 180-degree view of the Valdichiana Senese and Aretina, looking out towards Cortona and Lakes Chiusi, Montepulciano and Trasimeno. The walls that run along the trail date back to the first half the thirteenth century, when the town underwent urban expansion; over the centuries, a large part of the curtain wall has been subject to renovations and reductions in height.
